Babysitter trying to flee after abducting infant boy nabbed at airport

Detectives have nabbed a babysitter at Denver International Airport – Colorado who was trying to flee after allegedly abducting a four-month-old Utah boy. A babysitter abducted an infant boy and fled with him to Colorado, however, the alleged kidnapping bid was foiled by detectives who took her into custody from the airport, nearly 600 miles away in Denver According to Crime Online , Cedar City police had been informed by the mother of the infant, Peyton Everett Caraballo-Winston’s on Friday that she had allowed all three of her children to stay the night with their babysitter, who was to return them Friday morning. She complained that the babysitter, Emily Marissa Luciano, made continual excuses about her delay in returning the children. During the investigation, police learned that the babysitter had dropped the older children — ages 5 and 1 — “with a third-party” and taken Peyton with her to Colorado. The officials issued an AMBER Alert for the infant besides recovering and r...

At least 19 dead in Peru mountain road accident

LIMA: At least 19 people died and eight more were injured in a bus crash on a mountain road in Peru, police said on Monday. The crash happened in Canta province, around 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Lima at 8:30 pm (0130 GMT) on Sunday night, as travelers returned to the capital following a national holiday. The fatalities were 11 women and eight men, police colonel Jorge Castillo told the Andina press agency. No foreigners were among the victims. “The bus went off the road and crashed into the mountainside,” said Castillo, adding that the injured were taken to hospital. Police investigations suggest another vehicle was involved, Castillo told RPP radio station, adding that “there’s a lot of fog at this time of night.” Canta is a popular destination for both domestic and foreign tourists throughout the year. That can cause problems on narrow roads in the area due to heavy traffic. Fatal road accidents are frequent in Peru due to speeding, poor road surfaces, a lack of signage ...

Indians arrested for illegally entering US nearly triples

WASHINGTON: The number of Indians arrested for illegally entering the United States has nearly tripled so far in 2018, making them one of the largest groups of illegal aliens apprehended, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said on Friday. Paying smuggling rings between $25,000-$50,000 per person, a growing number of Indians are illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border and claiming asylum for persecution, CBP spokesman Salvador Zamora said. Many present viable claims, but a large number are economic migrants with fraudulent petitions that swamp the system and can cause legitimate cases to be “washed out” in the high volume of fraud, Zamora said in an interview. The Indian embassy in Washington and the Indian consulate in San Francisco did not respond to requests for comment. Zamora said the CBP expects that the data for the fiscal year that ends on Sept. 30 will show “around 9,000” Indian nationals had been apprehended versus 3,162 in fiscal year 2017. Around 4,000 Indians ...

Trump mocks Indian PM for library in Afghanistan

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for funding a library in Afghanistan, suggesting it was of no use. Trump brought up India’s aid during a rambling press appearance at a cabinet meeting as he defended his push for the United States to invest less overseas. While stating that he got along with Modi, Trump said the Indian leader was “constantly telling me he built a library in Afghanistan”. “You know what that is? That’s like five hours of what we spend,” Trump said. “And we’re supposed to say, ‘Oh, thank you for the library.’ I don’t know who’s using it in Afghanistan,” Trump said. It was unclear to which project Trump was referring, but India has committed $3 billion in assistance to Afghanistan since US-led forces toppled the extremist Taliban regime after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Projects have included the reconstruction of an elite high school in Kabul and scholarships to India for 1,000 Afghan students each year. Inaugu...

Delhi hospital treats, provides refuge to Muslims amid deadly violence

NEW DELHI: As deadly violence erupted in the northeast of New Delhi this week, with armed mobs rampaging the streets, a small hospital located in a densely packed Muslim neighbourhood found itself at the epicentre of the unrest. Al-Hind Hospital, in the riot-torn Mustafabad neighbourhood, was flooded with patients this week, and it has also become a place of refuge for people whose homes were burned or destroyed. At least 38 people were killed and hundreds more injured in the worst sectarian violence in Delhi in decades, as groups of Hindus and Muslims clashed. The violence began after weeks of protests over a citizenship law that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government introduced in December, which eases the path to Indian citizenship for minority groups from neighbouring Muslim-majority countries. Critics say the law is biased against Muslims and undermines India’s secular constitution. On Thursday people were still trickling in, saying they had suffered acid attacks and bea...

China promises retaliation if US imposes more tariffs

BEIJING:China on Monday promised retaliation if U.S. President Donald Trump escalates their tariff battle, raising the risk Beijing might target operations of American companies as it runs out of imports for penalties. The threat came after Trump said Friday he was considering extending penalties to an additional $267 billion of Chinese products in their battle over Beijing’s technology policy. That would be on top of $50bn of goods already hit by 25 per cent duties and another $200bn on which Washington is poised to raise tariffs. “If the United States insists on imposing another round of tariffs on Chinese products, China will definitely take countermeasures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said. Geng gave no details, but the government said in June it would impose unspecified “comprehensive measures” if necessary. That left American companies on edge about whether Beijing might use its control over the heavily regula...

Bill targeting ‘yellow vest’ ‘hooligans’ ignites French freedom debate

PARIS: French lawmakers have backed a bill banning protesters from hiding their faces during demonstrations, reinforcing President Emmanuel Macron’s efforts to push back against violent members of the “yellow vest” movement. The bill, which is expected to secure approval next week, also grants police greater powers to extract potential trouble-makers from demonstrations. Addressing the lower house National Assembly, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner urged members to “stop the brutes … (who listen) only to their hunger for chaos”. Opponents of the “anti-casseurs” (anti-hooligan) bill accused the government of impinging on civil liberties, with the debate exposing divisions within Macron’s party, which has a comfortable majority in parliament. The tactics used by police around the country have come under scrutiny, in particular the firing of “flash ball” riot guns, which have caused serious injuries, including at least one person blinded in one eye. “We’re not restricting freed...

Russian hackers targeted California, Indiana Democratic parties

WASHINGTON: The group of Russian hackers accused of meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election earlier this year targeted the email accounts of Democratic state parties in California and Indiana, and influential think tanks in Washington and New York, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The attempted intrusions, many of which were internally flagged by Microsoft Corp over the summer, were carried out by a group often nicknamed “Fancy Bear.” The hackers’ activity provides insight into how Russian intelligence is targeting the United States in the run-up to the Nov. 3 election. The targets identified by Reuters, which include the Center for American Progress, the Council on Foreign Relations and the Washington-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said they had not seen any evidence of successful hacking attempts. Fancy Bear is controlled by Russia’s military intelligence agency and was responsible for hacking the email accounts of Hillary Clinton’s sta...
