At least 19 dead in Peru mountain road accident

LIMA: At least 19 people died and eight more were injured in a bus crash on a mountain road in Peru, police said on Monday. The crash happened in Canta province, around 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Lima at 8:30 pm (0130 GMT) on Sunday night, as travelers returned to the capital following a national holiday. The fatalities were 11 women and eight men, police colonel Jorge Castillo told the Andina press agency. No foreigners were among the victims. “The bus went off the road and crashed into the mountainside,” said Castillo, adding that the injured were taken to hospital. Police investigations suggest another vehicle was involved, Castillo told RPP radio station, adding that “there’s a lot of fog at this time of night.” Canta is a popular destination for both domestic and foreign tourists throughout the year. Trump mocks Indian PM for library in Afghanistan

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for funding a library in Afghanistan, suggesting it was of no use. Trump brought up India’s aid during a rambling press appearance at a cabinet meeting as he defended his push for the United States to invest less overseas. While stating that he got along with Modi, Trump said the Indian leader was “constantly telling me he built a library in Afghanistan”. “You know what that is? NEW DELHI: As deadly violence erupted in the northeast of New Delhi this week, with armed mobs rampaging the streets, a small hospital located in a densely packed Muslim neighbourhood found itself at the epicentre of the unrest. Al-Hind Hospital, in the riot-torn Mustafabad neighbourhood, was flooded with patients this week, and it has also become a place of refuge for people whose homes were burned or destroyed. Indians arrested for illegally entering US nearly triples

WASHINGTON: The number of Indians arrested for illegally entering the United States has nearly tripled so far in 2018, making them one of the largest groups of illegal aliens apprehended, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said on Friday. Paying smuggling rings between $25,000-$50,000 per person, a growing number of Indians are illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border and claiming asylum for persecution, CBP spokesman Salvador Zamora said. Many present viable claims, but a large number are economic migrants with fraudulent petitions that swamp the system and can cause legitimate cases to be “washed out” in the high volume of fraud, Zamora said in an interview. China promises retaliation if US imposes more tariffs

BEIJING:China on Monday promised retaliation if U.S. President Donald Trump escalates their tariff battle, raising the risk Beijing might target operations of American companies as it runs out of imports for penalties. The threat came after Trump said Friday he was considering extending penalties to an additional $267 billion of Chinese products in their battle over Beijing’s technology policy. That would be on top of $50bn of goods already hit by 25 per cent duties and another $200bn on which Washington is poised to raise tariffs. “If the United States insists on imposing another round of tariffs on Chinese products, China will definitely take countermeasures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said. Russian hackers targeted California, Indiana Democratic parties

WASHINGTON: The group of Russian hackers accused of meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election earlier this year targeted the email accounts of Democratic state parties in California and Indiana, and influential think tanks in Washington and New York, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The attempted intrusions, many of which were internally flagged by Microsoft Corp over the summer, were carried out by a group often nicknamed “Fancy Bear.” The hackers’ activity provides insight into how Russian intelligence is targeting the United States in the run-up to the Nov. 3 election. TOKYO: For a mask producer in Japan, the transition from President Donald Trump to Joe Biden has been a smooth one, as it switches production to masks of the Democrat president-elect. Ogawa Studios, a small producer in Saitama, north of Tokyo, starting making rubber Biden masks earlier this year but since his election win last week, it has ramped up production. In October alone, 1,000 Biden masks were sold for 2,400 yen ($22.81) each, and the company has set a goal of producing a further 25,000 by year’s end. Armenia accuses Turkish fighter jet of downing warplane

BAKU/YEREVAN: Armenia said a Turkish F-16 fighter jet shot down one of its warplanes over Armenian airspace on Tuesday, killing the pilot, but Turkey called the claim “absolutely untrue”. Any such incident would mark a potentially major escalation of conflict in the South Caucasus region.
