NEW DELHI: As deadly violence erupted in the northeast of New Delhi this week, with armed mobs rampaging the streets, a small hospital located in a densely packed Muslim neighbourhood found itself at the epicentre of the unrest. Al-Hind Hospital, in the riot-torn Mustafabad neighbourhood, was flooded with patients this week, and it has also become a place of refuge for people whose homes were burned or destroyed. PARIS/ROME: A fireman died and 19 people were missing in France and Italy after a storm hit border regions of the two countries, causing heavy flooding that swept away roads and damaged homes, authorities said on Saturday. The storm, dubbed Alex, ravaged several villages around the city of Nice on the French Riviera. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi called it the worst flooding disaster in the area for more than a century after flying over the worst-hit area by helicopter. “The roads and about 100 houses were swept away or partially destroyed,” he told French news channel BFM. At least eight people were missing in France, authorities said. These included two firemen whose vehicle was carried away by a swollen river, according to local witnesses cited by several French media. Trump mocks Indian PM for library in Afghanistan

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for funding a library in Afghanistan, suggesting it was of no use. Trump brought up India’s aid during a rambling press appearance at a cabinet meeting as he defended his push for the United States to invest less overseas. While stating that he got along with Modi, Trump said the Indian leader was “constantly telling me he built a library in Afghanistan”. “You know what that is? That’s like five hours of what we spend,” Trump said. “And we’re supposed to say, ‘Oh, thank you for the library.’ I don’t know who’s using it in Afghanistan,” Trump said. WASHINGTON: Senior US federal and state election officials said Thursday that there was “no evidence” that votes were lost or changed, or voting systems corrupted, in the presidential election. Detectives have nabbed a babysitter at Denver International Airport – Colorado who was trying to flee after allegedly abducting a four-month-old Utah boy. BAKU/YEREVAN: Armenia said a Turkish F-16 fighter jet shot down one of its warplanes over Armenian airspace on Tuesday, killing the pilot, but Turkey called the claim “absolutely untrue”. Any such incident would mark a potentially major escalation of conflict in the South Caucasus region. Turkey is a close ally of Azerbaijan, which is fighting ethnic Armenian forces in a major new flare-up of a decades-old conflict over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. WASHINGTON: The group of Russian hackers accused of meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election earlier this year targeted the email accounts of Democratic state parties in California and Indiana, and influential think tanks in Washington and New York, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The attempted intrusions, many of which were internally flagged by Microsoft Corp over the summer, were carried out by a group often nicknamed “Fancy Bear.” The hackers’ activity provides insight into how Russian intelligence is targeting the United States in the run-up to the Nov. 3 election. The vast majority of Japanese voters back allowing women to inherit the Chrysanthemum Throne, a new polls shows, as the royal family struggles with a dearth of male heirs. A Turkish soccer player reportedly confessed to killing his five-year-old son afflicted with coronavirus and using the disease as a cover to hush up the offence. Cevher Toktas, who plays soccer in the Turkish Regional Amateur League, told local police that he smothered his son at a hospital where he was admitted because of suspected coronavirus infection. He brought his son to a hospital in Turkey on April 23 when the boy was coughing and running a fever. Medical staff reportedly isolated the father and son together, believing that they both were likely infected. On the same day, Toktas covered his son’s face with a pillow for 15 minutes while the boy may have already been experiencing respiratory difficulties.
